Read: 1 Samuel 16:1-3 ESV

The Lord had told Samuel that he should anoint one of the sons of Jesse to king. First the eldest son of Samuel, Elian, was presented. This has to be the new king, Samuel thought. Elian looks impressive and strong. But Samuel doesn’t get the assignment to anoint him as king. The reason the Lord gives him, is that He doesn’t look at the appearance but to the heart. We pay too much attention to the outward appearance and not at what the motivations of the hearts are. Jesse presents seven sons to Samuel, but there is no future king among them. Eventually there is one son left, David, but he is a shepherd. This David could certainly not be the next king?! Jesse didn’t even invite David… But the Lord said “This is him” and Samuel anoints David “amongst his brothers.” Doesn’t that language remind you of the baptism of the True David? After Jesus was baptized, a voice came from heaven: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”. Jesus, the only Man who lived on earth who our Heavenly Father always looked at full joy and happiness. And Jesus himself, gave His life to give us forgiveness, salvation, hope and redemption. Praise His name!

Pray this prayer today.
Father, thank You that You look at the heart. You look into the depths of my soul, my morals and values and motivations. In Your presence I’ll take of my mask. You know my heart doesn’t always have the right posture. And still, You love me. Thank You, Father, for your love, mercy and patience with me. It’s my prayer today that my heart will be focused on you, and you alone in this time or prayer and fasting. In Jesus name, Amen.
